Explorer already held the title of America's all-time best-selling SUV - and now the large utility has been redesigned from the ground up. The all-new 2020 Explorer not only has a completely redesigned exterior, interior and chassis, it also features a broader lineup than its predecessor - including a hybrid powertrain and Ford Performance-designed ST model. Explorer strengths include its standard driver-assist technologies, available 5,600-lb. towing capability, performance, aerodynamic styling and fuel economy. With its all-new attributes, Explorer puts the competition on notice.
From the 90s to the 2000s, the 4Runner and the Explorer have competed squarely against each other in the mid-size SUV marketplace showcasing their practicality and incredible capability. Now in 2020 with the Explorer's redesign, the Explorer has the edge with an advantage in comfort, safety, and all-new technology.
Comfort and Convenience

Tall drivers and front seat passengers will love the Explorer. In the Explorer's redesign process, Ford kept these people in the front of their mind by giving them room in the front - greater front head- and leg-room than passengers will have in the 4Runner. Rear passengers are in luck as well with significantly more head and leg room in the Explorer than the 4Runner. The Ford Explorer also requires fewer stops at the gas station than the 4Runner, making life more comfortable and convenient for you and your passengers.

True Safety

The explorer uses a blind spot warning system with digital, computer-monitored cameras that will alert you to moving objects in your blind spot. To make backing even safer, the Explorer uses a cross-path warning system to alert you to vehicles approaching from the side and help you avoid collisions. The 4Runner does not offer a cross-path warning system for your safety.

COMPETITIVE STRENGTHS

Auto Start-Stop Technology

The 2020 Explorer provides standard Auto Start-Stop Technology on its 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 and 2.0L EcoBoost V6 engines, along with standard Active Grille Shutters, to help optimize fuel use.

4 distinct powertrain options available.

With a specially tuned 3.0L EcoBoost V6, the ST promises 400 horsepower and 415 lb.‑ft. of torque. Environmentally conscious Explorer customers can select the Hybrid powertrain, which offers an EPA-estimated 27 city/29 hwy./28 combined mpg on the RWD model.

Standard Technology Advantages.

Many vehicles offer special technology for their drivers. The difference: the 2020 Ford Explorer offers Ford Co-Pilot360 as a standard option with even more options available such as Michelin 20" self-sealing tires, reverse break assist, and intelligent adaptive cruise control. Woah.

PowerFold Third Row Seats.

Third row seats that fold flat with the touch of a button.

Efficiency in mind.

The new Hybrid powertrain can rely on an electric power in certain situations to save fuel before switching automatically to the gas engine.

Hybrid Option.

Explorer offers a 3.3L V6 Hybrid powertrain with modular 10-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain is available on the Limited series and features a 3.3L V6 gas engine paired with a high-voltage battery and electric drive motor. This provides an EPA-estimated range of over 500 miles on one tank of gas, for the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model.

FordPass Connect.

This 4G LTE modem can provide a 4G LTE Wi-Fi connection to as many as 10 devices and can be used in conjunction with the FordPass app to access features such as remote start, locating a parked vehicle, lock/unlock, and vehicle status.

Design and Styling Up Front.

LED fog lamps and silver-painted skid plate elements are found on XLT with 202A models and above. And when the weather turns cold, customers will appreciate the standard windshield wiper de-icer on Limited and Platinum.

Available Enhanced Active Park Assist 2.0

Active Park Assist 2.0 makes parking less stressful by going beyond just taking over steering operations. This system now controls shifting, braking and acceleration too! System is capable of reverse perpendicular parking, parallel parking and park out assist operation.
